Istanbul Technical University Maritime Faculty Maritime Studies Club (ITU DENARK) hosted Beşiktaş Shipping Human Resources Manager Sadık Nazım Er as part of the “Experience Speaks” event.
Beşiktaş Shipping Human Resources Manager, İTÜ 2004 Graduate Sadık Nazım Er, who participated in the “Experience Speaks” event organized by ITU DENARK, continues his duty on land after working at sea for 8 years.
Working as the human resources manager in the same company for two months, Er worked at Dünya Denizcilik, Genel Denizcilik, and Ditaş Shipping companies. He went ashore with the birth of his children. Er, who shared his knowledge and experience with the members of ITU DENARK (Maritime Research Club), had a pleasant conversation.
“You must have managerial skills”
Sadık Nazım Er said, “I am one of you. I am your older brother. You are very important to us” and continued his words,
“Graduating from the Maritime Faculty is not being a captain or an engineer. A person who graduates from this faculty should have good features and have managerial qualifications. As Beşiktaş company, we want this from you.
Beşiktaş Shipping started business in 1960 with only one barge ship. Beşiktaş Shipping, which made a serious breakthrough after 2004, currently has 29 ships. It also cooperates with big oil companies such as BP and SHELL. And since the biggest plus is the shipowner company, things are resolved faster and on-site. Our mission is to provide first-class business service to the customer. ISO ship management system (a set of rules) integrated with Beşiktaş shipping ISM is applied.
“Our attendance rate is 90 percent”
There is 984 personnel in total within the body. The staff retention rate is very high, at 90 percent. This shows that the employees who have worked before want to continue in the company. When you sit at the table with the man who gives you your shoulder in the storm, a fluid working environment is provided because he knows the words that will come out of your mouth in advance. And that makes us family. Our biggest difference from other companies is our family environment.
As Beşiktaş company, we aim for an 8 percent quota for women while recruiting personnel. We attach great importance to our female colleagues and apply a positive discrimination policy to bring women to the fore in the maritime sector. The school where we allocate the most quota while recruiting interns is ITU Maritime Faculty. One of the most important qualifications we consider is the managerial qualification. In addition, we consider success factors such as grade point average.’
Accepting the request of ITU Maritime Faculty Dean Özcan Arslan to increase the quota, Er announced that ITU students will personally conduct an oral question-answer and introductory interview while recruiting interns to the company.
“You must be a qualified world person”
“Where do you want to come in maritime? Because the main problem is that the graduates of the Maritime Faculty do not do this job for a long time and I saw this more clearly when I switched to human resources,” said Er, “Your aim should always be to go to the end and move the maritime industry forward. In short, you have to do your best to become a qualified world person.”
Sadık Nazım Er answered the questions from the students as follows,
How did you decide to move from captain to land?
I love the sea very much. My port wallet and documents are still active. The reason I went ashore was because of my daughter. When my daughter was just born, I decided to go ashore.
What was your motivation until you became a captain?
As a person who came from Anatolia, I realized that I discovered myself in this profession. I learned new things in every port, every route. I realized that there is no limit to learning. The desire for self-improvement has always motivated me.
With the question “Are you a member of the club?”, which is one of the possible questions to be asked in the interviews, do you mean only maritime clubs?
No, the reason we ask about the Clubs is to determine your competence in social areas, your human relations, and your sense of responsibility.
Sharing his knowledge and experience with the members of ITU DENARK (Maritime Research Club), Er concluded his speech by stating that he wanted to be together more and to meet with members of different organizations.
