It was announced that the Nae Sao Paulo ship, which contains asbestos and intense toxic waste, would not be allowed to enter Türkiye, although it turned out that the ship did not stop, only slowed down its speed.
Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Murat Kurum announced that a dangerous inventory report was requested for the ship but no response was given and that the conditional dismantling permit was canceled and the ship would not be allowed to enter Turkish territorial waters.
‘Not stopping, but slowing down has been ordered…’
The latest situation regarding the Nae Sao Paulo ship created a great surprise. It was learned that SÖK Shipping, which will carry out the dismantling of the ship, did not give the order to stop the ship and only slowed the ship down. The route of the ship did not change and as of today, she continued to move towards the Strait of Gibraltar, which was towed and brought to Türkiye by the Alp Centre ship. It was observed that the average speed of the ship was reduced from 7 knots to 4.4 knots.
A statement has been made from the company regarding the subject!
SÖK Shipping company made a statement regarding the subject:
“Referring to the latest press release of our Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, we would like to state that international laws/regulations and ministry instructions have been adhered to from the beginning of the project until today. In addition, we would like to point out that, we deeply regret that our ship recycling facility and our company, which we operate with a high degree of sensitivity towards human health and the environment, have been shown by some media organizations and NGOs as acting illegally, insensitive and covertly, with unfounded news, unproven information and baseless claims. Although we have the second Hazardous Inventory Report, which was prepared by a different internationally accredited firm before leaving the Brazilian port to eliminate the concerns of the public, showing very close results to the first report, we are ready and willing to have the third dangerous inventory report prepared outside of Turkish Territorial Waters if requested by the Ministry and by the company/institution/organization to be appointed by the Ministry (with the participation of ministry experts). As a result, regardless of the decision, we as a company will inform the public that we will comply with the instructions of our Ministry.”
