The former aircraft carrier São Paulo, which contains hazardous waste, is suspended in international waters near Brazil after being circulated in the Atlantic Ocean for 74 days. For the ship to enter Brazilian territorial waters, an inspection report was prepared by AWS Service on October 12, 2022.
AWS, the specialized agency accredited by the Brazilian Maritime Authority, determined that the hull of the former aircraft carrier São Paulo was damaged and recommended that the ship be moved to a sheltered area for underwater inspection and, if repair in water is not possible, repairs to be carried out in dry dock.
There is no control document
The report stated that the keel of the hull of São Paulo was laid on November 15, 1957, and launched on July 23, 1960, and it was stated that no control documents were available to record and allow structural conditions and to measure the thickness of the plates.
Should retreat to sheltered space
It was recommended by Atlantis Dive Works company and Aqualis Offshore Ltd. company that during the 74 days between 02 August and 11 October 2022, the ship’s existing underwater inspection documents, it was recommended to move the ship to a sheltered area where underwater inspection can be done without being towed in the ocean, then make repairs in the water, if not possible, enter a set for repair.
The company mentioned in the allegations denied the news that the ship with asbestos Nae Sao Paulo, whose permit was canceled while being taken to Aliağa for dismantling after being taken from the Brazilian Navy, will be purchased by another Turkish company.
