Carnival Cruise Line, one of the most important cruise ship operators in the world, sends the cruise ship Carnival Ecstasy to Aliağa for dismantling.
The cruise ship Carnival Ecstasy completed her final voyage, after 31 years of service, in Alabama’s Port of Mobile on October 15. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to retire the ship as it tries to modernize its fleet. M/S Ecstasy made more than 2300 trips all over the world in 31 years and carried about 5.5 million passengers during her service.
Carnival Ecstasy, which was dismantled in Aliağa, was built by Shipyard Wartsila and started her voyages in April 1991. The ship was the second ship built in a new class of ships and was built in response to Carnival’s competitors’ introduction of larger cruise ships that could hold more than 2000 passengers. At the time, the 70,000 gross-ton ship was one of the largest ever built.
Toward the end of her career, the ship was reserved by the company for shorter cruises of 5 days or less. Ecstasy will be replaced by Carnival Spirit, which is about 10 years younger.
Carnival Ecstasy took four more ships from the voyage shortly after the onset of Covid-19, three of which, Fantasy, Imagination, and Inspiration, were sent to Türkiye for scrapping. The company’s fourth ship was also sold to a Chinese operator but was also scrapped in 2022.
