Captain Mustafa Can, who participated in the seminar titled “Could there be Challenges Bigger Than Waves?” organized by the TMMOB Chamber of Ship Machinery Management Engineers (GEMİMO) and Maritime Psychology Association, said that NGOs that work like classification societies that focus on the health of ships and that focus on the mental health of seafarers should be implemented.
Their licenses are taken, but…
Reminding that at the Seafarers’ Disciplinary Commission meetings, of which he is a member, they encountered dozens of cases, from sailors who killed the captain to oilers who stabbed the chef, Captain Mustafa Can said that the “forgotten” crew psychology should be discussed as soon as possible. Noting that the licenses of the seafarers involved in the crime were taken, but these punishments are not sustainable, Can said that organizations that focus on the psychology of the seafarers should be established with the same logic as the classification societies that focus on the condition of the ships.
To be followed continuously
Captain Mustafa Can said, “Shipowners will cover the cost of the services to be provided by organizations that will gain international recognition, such as the Maritime Psychology Association. These organizations will carry out routine checks of the crew participating in the ship, including online bilateral meetings, and determine their psychological status. In line with the reports given by these institutions, insurance companies will get off the problematic crew from the ship wherever they are in the world.” Captain Mustafa Can added that they will establish the Maritime Psychology Department of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs when they come to power as the Zafer Party.
