Karadeniz Holding is one of the most important companies in the Turkish energy sector. The company, which designed and built the “Powership” project, the world’s first floating power plant, transforms ships into energy with LNG, natural gas, and fuel oil. Operating in 11 countries in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, the holding’s total power of 25 ships in its fleet is 4,400 MW. Karadeniz Holding meets between 10 percent and 100 percent of the electricity of the countries it is in with the ships it has produced since 2010.
Generates electricity with 3 ships
One of the last countries Karadeniz Holding has taken a step towards is Cuba, which has an energy problem, according to the news of Dünya Newspaper. Karadeniz Holding, which signed an agreement with Cuba’s state electricity company Union Electrica de Cuba (UNE) in October 2018, agreed to produce a total of 110 MW of electricity with 3 ships for 51 months. Of these ships, Barış Bey and Esra Sultan started operating in Port de Mariel in July 2019, and Ela Sultan in November 2019. In November 2019, contract capacity with the Cuban Government was increased to 184 MW. The Turkish company has come to meet 10 percent of the country’s total electricity needs with 3 ships.
Karadeniz Holding started negotiations to increase both the capacity and power of this agreement. The new project was announced by the Cuban Minister of Energy and Mining, Livan Nicolas Arronte Cruz. The Cuban Minister, who came to Turkey and held talks at Karadeniz Holding’s shipyard in Yalova, announced the agreement that will increase the number of ships to 4 during his meeting with the management of the Turkish company. Minister Cruz stated that the new ship will have an installed capacity of 15 MW. The name of the ship, which will start operating in Cuba, will be Belgin Sultan.
