The construction process of the world’s largest zero-emission ferry has started with the steel cutting carried out at Cemre Shipyard.
Burak Mursaloğlu, Head of Business Development at Cemre Shipyard, said, “We are happy and proud to have completed the first phase of the construction process of this environmentally friendly and promising ship. We hope that the cooperation between LMG and Scandlines will continue in the future.”
Michael Guldmann Petersen, COO of Scandlines, said, “After months of preparation, we are happy to see the project come to life. “The start of cutting steel is an important milestone for our zero-emission ferry.”
The zero-emission ferry, which will be built for the Danish ferry operator Scandlines and will enter service in 2024, will be 47 meters long and can carry 140 passengers and 66 trucks.
Designed by LMG Marin AS, in Norway, the ferry trucks can be transported on both the upper and lower decks. The modular structure of the ship will also be suitable for carrying passenger vehicles. With the zero-emission hybrid diesel/battery electric propulsion system, the ship will operate in two different operating conditions, cruising at 10 knots with zero emissions, and will cruise at 16 knots in diesel-hybrid mode with the support of its generators.
The ship, which will be built according to Lloyd’s Register class rules, will carry the title of the ship with the largest battery capacity of her kind, with a battery capacity of approximately 10 MWh.
