It is stated that Kitty Hawk, one of the most important aircraft carriers of the US Navy that served in the Pacific for a period, was sold to the International Shipbreaking Company for less than 1 dollar to be dismantled and scrapped.
Kitty Hawk, which is approximately 300 meters long and 90 meters wide, will set off from Washington and will travel around the South American coasts to reach its final destination, Texas.
The last oil-powered ship
The ship, which served for 48 years between 1961 and 2009 and has been kept idle since then, also took part in the Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq wars. Launched in 1960 and named after the North Carolina town where the Wright Brothers made their first flight, the aircraft carrier was retired in 2009. Kitty Hawk was one of the last USA aircraft carriers powered by oil. The USA navy later switched to nuclear-powered Nimitz-class ships.
Joined the Vietnam War
There was a big fight between black and white soldiers on Kitty Hawk, one of the ships joined the war in Vietnam, and 47 sailors were injured in this incident, in 1972. After the investigation carried to the USA Congress, the incident was described as one of the darkest pages in the history of the USA navy.
The USS Kitty Hawk also came to the fore when it collided with a Soviet submarine during the Cold War years. It is expected that the aircraft carrier will be disassembled and its scrap used by the company to which it was sold.
