To determine the identity of Turkish truck driver Mehmet Çakır (42), who disappeared in the fire that broke out on the ferry named Euroferi Olympia, which makes the trip from the Greek port of Igoumenitsa to the port of Brindisi in Italy, a DNA sample was taken from his sister. It was stated that the DNA sample of Çakır will be compared with the 4 bodies found on the ferry. Big sister Yeşim Gür said, “We want my brother to be brought to his hometown, even if it is his funeral.”
A fire broke out on the ferry named Euroferi Olympia, which left the Greek city of Igoumenitsa to go to Italy, near the island of Corfu, on February 18. Search and rescue teams intervened in the fire on the ferry, which had 288 passengers, 237 passengers, and 51 crew members. 26 of the 27 Turkish citizens who were stated to be on the ferry at the time of the fire were rescued, but there was no hear from Mehmet Çakır, a 9-year-old truck driver. It has been noted that Çakır, who has been shipping abroad for 1 year, took the fresh fish he had bought from the Urla district of İzmir to Spain. It was stated that he first passed to Greece via Edirne, and plans to cross to Italy by ferry. It was also revealed that his friend had seen Çakır shortly before the ferry fire. It was stated that Çakır, who had dinner with his friend, later went to the truck, and when the fire started, his friend looked for Çakır on the ship but could not find him.
Anxious suspense
While Mehmet Çakır’s father Sedat Çakır (71), mother Hülya Çakır (70), older sister Yeşim Gür and brother-in-law Davut Gür (52) living in Aydın continue to wait anxiously, It was decided to perform a DNA test with the possibility that 1 of the 4 bodies found in the burning ferry may belong to Çakır. Çakır’s older sister Yeşim Gür, who went to the hospital, gave a blood sample. It was stated that the DNA sample would be taken to Greece and compared with the bodies found.
Sister Yeşim Gür said, “I went to Aydın State Hospital accompanied by the Gendarmerie teams and gave a DNA sample. The blood sample taken from me will first be taken to Izmir and then to Greece. After the comparison is made there, it will be determined whether 1 of the 4 bodies found belongs to my brother. We await with interest and concern. Even if it is my brother’s funeral, we want him to be brought to his hometown. We expect the developments from the authorities to be conveyed to us.
