The Montreux Convention, which has come to the fore again with the Russian operation in Ukraine, is monitored 24 hours a day by 29 cameras by the Istanbul Straits Coast Guard Marmara and Straits Regional Command Imaging Center.

The Coast Guard Marmara and Straits Regional Command continues its activities at full speed to ensure the safety of life and property in the seas, to prevent all kinds of illegal activities, and to protect marine resources sustainably in its area of responsibility in the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, and the Aegean Sea. Within the Regional Command, there are 3 Group Commands, 5 Patrol Commands, 48 floating elements, 4 Diving Teams, and 4 Mobile Radar Teams.
Another institution that manages the ship traffic in the Straits is the General Directorate of Coastal Safety. The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure General Directorate of Coastal Safety provides services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure the safety of navigation, life, property, and the environment at sea with 104 vessels of various types and classes and its experienced staff.
A total of 74 personnel, 47 of whom are Marine Traffic Operators and Chief Operators, work at the Ship Traffic Services Center in Istanbul. The Ship Traffic Services Center in Istanbul has an important role in ensuring the safe passage of ships in the Turkish Straits region, maintaining the ship traffic organization, especially in emergency management and coordination. While ensuring the safe passage of ships through our straits; Immediate response is also provided to ships that break down, are in danger, or experience any emergency.
Domestic and national software will be passed
The Ship Traffic Services Center in Istanbul will soon switch to domestic and national software with the Turkish Straits Ship Traffic Services System Upgrade Project carried out in collaboration with HAVELSAN. With this software, all this ship traffic will be monitored and managed. Temporary acceptance tests in the domestic and national software process are about to be completed.
