HaiSea Marine’s electric-powered harbour tug HaiSea Wamis has won International Tug & Salvage (ITS) Tug of the Year 2023 after its completion at a major Turkish shipyard.
This powerful battery-driven tugboat beat several other shortlisted nominees in one of the most competitive fields to win the Bureau Veritas-sponsored ITS award.
Sanmar Shipyards built this 28-m tugboat at its Tuzla facilities as the first of three zero-emissions, battery-powered harbour tugs.
It was built to Robert Allan Ltd ElectRA 2800 design to support gas carriers berthing at LNG Canada’s new export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia.
This tug has 65 tonnes of bollard pull and was designed to perform regular ship-berthing and undocking missions using battery-electric power. It is fitted with two Schottel SCD 460 CombiDrives and has a service speed of 12 knots.
HaiSea Wamis is also the first tugboat to receive the UWN notation from ABS for underwater noise reduction.
ITS Tug of the Year Award was presented to HaiSea Marine as the owner, Robert Allan Ltd as the designer and Sanmar Shipyards as the builder during a gala dinner at TUGTECHNOLOGY ’23, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 22 May.
Receiving the Award, Seaspan Senior Vice President Jordan Pechie said, “We’re very honoured and surprised. This project was the embodiment of partnerships, strategic ones. We built these tugs through Covid, a Ukrainian steel crisis, supply chain chaos and … as we continue on to the sea trials and the vessel is now sailing, it’s incredible to see our dream become a reality.”
