Aleksey Likhachev, General Director of the Russian State Atomic Energy Agency Rosatom, announced that they opened up negotiations with Türkiye on the construction of a nuclear power plant in Sinop.
Stating that Türkiye plans to build its second nuclear power plant in Sinop. Stating that they opened up negotiations with the Turkish side for the establishment of the second power plant, Lihachev said, “This is an extremely interesting field for establishing a large-capacity nuclear power plant with 4 power units, located on the shore of the Black Sea, which is well known by all nuclear experts in the world. We opened up negotiations with our Turkish business partners about the formation of technological cooperation, investment policy, and approaches to the creation of the Turkish energy market, taking into account this great nuclear power plant of the future.
Türkiye signed an agreement with Russia in 2010 for the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Mersin, which will be its first nuclear power plant. The power plant built in Akkuyu will consist of 4 reactors and will have a total installed capacity of 4,800 megawatts. The first reactor is expected to go into operation in 2023.
