The workshop was opened at Tuzla Ay Yıldız Social Facilities on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 10:30. Students studying at Karadeniz Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, Piri Reis University, Yıldız Technical University, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University, and Bursa Technical University, which started shipbuilding education in the 2021-2022 academic year, participated in the workshop.
In the workshop held with the participation of 130 students, Chamber of Ship Engineers Chairman of the Board Salih Bostancı, Vice President Mustafa Kürşat Pekşen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Ship Machinery Management Engineers Feramuz Aşkın, Dean of PRU Maritime Faculty Prof. Dr. Şebnem Helvacıoğlu, Dean of PRU Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. İsmail Hakkı Helvacıoğlu, YTU Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Ahmet Dursun Alkan and sector representatives attended.
After a moment of silence and the National Anthem, the workshop started with the opening speech of Melih Sakallıoğlu, President of the Student Committee of the Chamber of Ship Engineers. Sakallıoğlu said, “My esteemed elders and fellow students, welcome to the 9th Student Workshop organized by the TMMOB Chamber of Ship Engineers Student Committee. We are in a vibrant sector that is constantly developing and we will ensure the continuity of this sector. This is a big responsibility. As Cemal Süreyya said, blue is more than a color, it is an endless sky, a hopeful sea, and a reason to gather us here. We must work hard to carry this hope into the future, as of today’s and tomorrow’s naval engineers. I would like to thank all our elders, especially the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Ship Engineers, who supported us on this path. I would also like to thank my friends in the organizing team who helped me organize the workshop.” He conveyed his thanks to the GMO Board of Directors, which was a pioneer in the realization of this organization. Then, he left the chair to Salih Bostancı, Chairman of the Board of TMMOB Chamber of Ship Engineers.
Bostancı stated that the workshop and its outputs have an important place for the shipbuilding industry and shipbuilding training. Noting that the number of naval engineer candidates studying in parallel with the number of schools providing shipbuilding education has increased. He added that the bonds between future naval engineers, who have been studying at different schools that will work together in the sector for many years, have begun to be established in such student events. Continuing his speech by reiterating his confidence that the students will take the shipbuilding industry to even higher levels in the future, Bostancı thanked the students and industry representatives who participated in the workshop and ended his speech with wishes for a successful workshop.
Congratulatory messages were shared by Adil Karaismailoğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Turkey, who could not attend the invitation.
The event continued with seminars. Within the scope of the seminar, ART Shipyard Mechanical Affairs Officer Gökhan Oduncu and Managing Director – Schore Marine and Power Engineering Unlimited Engineer Cenk Sözer made their trainer and tutorial presentations called “Main Engine and Propulsion Systems”.
The event continued with the 2nd seminar, by Murat Tansel Ergün, the Bodrum Representative of the Chamber of Ship Engineers, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Engineer, “What Happens to a Ship Engineer?”
1st, 2nd, and 3rd student workshops started at 13:45, after the seminars.
Students discussed new ideas and project proposals by exchanging ideas on the topics given to them within the scope of the workshops consisting of Organization, Education and Career, Defense, Digitalization and Innovation, Turkish Shipbuilding Industry, Design, Offshore Structures, Globalization. The ideas and projects of the students who took part in the workshop within the scope of the workshop were recorded by the workshop heads to be included in the workshop report later on. The first day ended after dinner.
Session of Day 2
The 9th Student Workshop, organized by the Union of Turkish Engineers and Architects Chambers of Marine Engineers Student Commission, 2nd-day program will be held at 10:00 at STM A.Ş. It started with the seminar by Özgür Ata, Lead Submarine Design Engineer, “Strategic Importance of Submarines and Submarine Design and Manufacturing Activities in Turkey”.
Norse Design Design Manager Ilgaz Can Karadayı continued with the seminar titled “Design Processes and Renewable Energies”, at 11:15. In the last part of the speech, Karadayı answered the questions asked by the students and ended with applause.
The program continued with the 4th and 5th workshops.
Students who participated in the 9th Student Workshop received suggestions about how the workshop was and how the next workshops could be improved. Afterward, the students continued the topics discussed in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Workshops and produced many new ideas and projects, and conveyed them to the workshop heads. All the notes taken after the workshop will be turned into a workshop final report and sent to the relevant institutions and organizations as the 9th Student Workshop report of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects Ship Engineers Student Committee.
The participants came together again for the closing program, at 16:00. After the student representatives of Karadeniz Technical University, Piri Reis University, Istanbul Technical University, Yıldız Technical University, Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University, and Bursa Technical University made their closing speeches, Turkish Engineers and Architects Union Chamber of Ship Engineers Student Commission President Melih Sakallıoğlu thanked everyone who attended the workshop. Then, Orçun Balbaş, Secretary-General of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects, Chamber of Ship Engineers, made his speech. Balbaş reiterated that the Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects, Chamber of Ship Engineers will always be the biggest supporter of the students, as a person who contributed to the establishment of the Student Commission and the organization of the first workshops. He mentioned that he is confident that a Student Commission will continue to exist, which will grow and develop in the coming periods, and that tremendous work will be done in the next workshops. Bostancı, Chairman of the Board of the Chamber of Ship Engineers, took the podium, after Balbaş. Bostancı shared his memories from his former student days and thanked everyone who contributed to the workshop. Determining the goal of the student commission members, Bostancı stated that the 10th Student Workshop could be held in Trabzon. Afterward, Sakallıoğlu, the head of the GMO student commission, transferred the term presidency to Karadeniz Technical University.
