The Norwegian aquaculture technology supplier has stuck a deal with AYK Energy to install a containerised energy storage unit on the vessel during its conversion at Norse Shipyard in Türkiye for Firda Seafood Group, a leading producer of fjord trout in western Norway.
The DNV class-approved 1-MWh energy storage solution will be fitted into a standard sized 20-ft container along with Bergen-headquartered Fjord Maritime’s Fjord Hybrid solution. The container is further equipped with safety and auxiliary systems to provide a reliable power supply to the vessel.
“As a business, we are growing rapidly, led by our vision of driving the green revolution,” said Fjord Maritime Chief Executive Vidar Rabben. “We have a long-term relationship with Firda, which has put sustainability and fish welfare at the heart of all its operations,” he said.
“Demand for state-of-the-art equipment is growing across aquaculture as businesses like Firda look to grow in a sustainable and safe way. Our solutions contribute to that with increased efficiency, safe operation and reduced emissions.”
Fjord Maritime has around 150 smart grid energy solutions in operation in the aquaculture sector.
AYK Energy global sales director Ed Carney said this project underlines the company’s position as an emerging manufacturer of marine battery systems.
“Containerised batteries will be one of the biggest innovations in the maritime industry in the next five to 10 years, specifically for the workboat, offshore, inland waterways and shortsea shipping sector,” he said.
“They can be installed easily on deck without taking up space below deck and incurring complex battery room safety requirements.
AYK Energy has built and shipped more than 15 MWh of batteries to Europe over the last year. It is planning to establish manufacturing centres in the US and Europe in 2024.
“When operational, the batteries can be swapped with fully charged replacements quickly at shoreside charging centres,” said Mr Carney.
“When more powerful battery technology is developed, or a different form of power is introduced, the container can be adapted for that purpose.”
