According to the statement made by the European Union Delegation to Türkiye, beach cleaning and diving activities will be carried out in Çanakkale, İstanbul, Van, Samsun, Trabzon, and Şanlıurfa to draw attention to the pollution in the seas, through the European Union Information Centers.
In the statement, it was stated that the youth were at the center of the beach cleaning activities due to the declaration of 2022 as the “European Youth Year” in Europe.
Within the scope of the campaign, it was stated that youth will go down to the beaches and raise awareness for clean oceans and the protection of biodiversity in the marine ecosystem, and the following information was shared:
“The Head of the European Union Delegation to Türkiye, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, will participate in the events on Thursday, October 20th, and contribute to the call for action in the fight against marine pollution. Within the scope of the campaign, the 23-meter-long ‘Digital Ocean Tunnel’, which draws attention to the pollution in the seas, can be visited in Çanakkale this year. In the Türkiye part of the global Beach Cleaning Campaign carried out in cooperation with the European Union, the United Nations and Smurfs, the European Union Delegation to Türkiye, and the European Union Information Centers created an intensive beach cleaning calendar. In this context, various awareness activities will be carried out in Çanakkale, İstanbul, Van, Samsun, Trabzon, and Şanlıurfa. In the Turkish part of the global awareness campaign for clean, plastic-free oceans, attention will be drawn to the preservation of biodiversity in the marine ecosystem. There will be a call for action to combat marine pollution. As part of the events, a 23-meter-long Digital Ocean Tunnel was established in Çanakkale, which Ambassador Landrut, Head of the European Union Delegation to Türkiye will also visit. With the experience of navigating the digital ocean, the importance of eliminating pollution at its source, consuming less, and recycling will be revealed in the fight against marine pollution. At the end of the tunnel, the answer to the question of what should be done for plastic-free and clean marine life will be found on the information screen.
In this context, youth in Türkiye will be on Atakum Beach in Samsun on October 21. Youth will clean Halfeti Lake for 10 days on October 20-24 in Şanlıurfa, and at the end of 10 days, trees will be planted around the lake. The event “European Union Beach Cleaning: Saving Lake Van” will be held in Van. On November 1st, there will be youth on the Şile coast in İstanbul, and they will draw attention to beach pollution and marine litter with representatives of NGOs. In Trabzon, on November 9, 2022, the “European Union Beach Cleaning: Children from Trabzon Unite Against Sea Litter” event will be held at Arsın Beach.”
