Students and volunteers cleaned the coast and the seabed in the Urla district of Izmir, as part of the 5 June World Environment Day activities.
According to the statement made by the Izmir Chamber of Shipping: Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Marine Protection Branch Directorate, IMEAK Chamber of Shipping Izmir Branch, and Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association (TURMEPA) Izmir Branches coordinated the event with Ege University Urla Maritime Vocational School students and students and teachers from different countries participated in the Erasmus+ Project carried out by Arkas Science and Art Center. During the coastal and seabed cleaning around İskele, Urla, the students dived into the sea and cleaned. In the event, 400 kilograms of solid waste were collected within 40 minutes.
Wastes, mostly consisting of glass bottles, tins, cigarette stubs, plastic boxes, and packaging was separated and sent for recycling by the teams of the Urla Municipality Cleaning Affairs Directorate.
Yusuf Öztürk, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the İzmir Branch of the IMEAK Chamber of Shipping and the İzmir Branch of the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association, whose views were included in the statement, stated that the best way to protect the seas is not to pollute, and asked everyone to be sensitive about this issue.
