After two major earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) launched 1.200 ferries, each with a capacity of 2 passengers, to support the victims and heal the wounds. IMM’s Osmangazi and Orhangazi ships with a capacity of 1.200 people, moving towards Iskenderun, will be a shelter problem in the disaster area and a solution to many needs.
The loading of aid parcels and internal arrangements were completed on the ferries that set off for Hatay Iskenderun at around 11.00:XNUMX am. Living and sheltering areas were prepared for the citizens inside the Orhangazi ship.
Stating that the ferries sent off from Yenikapı IDO Pier were prepared to heal the wounds of earthquake victims, IMM Secretary General Can Akın Çağlar stated that IMM is one of the institutions with the highest technical capacity in Turkey and gave the following information:
“Currently, more than 2.800 personnel and 760 vehicles are working in the earthquake zone. We directed all our resources to Hatay under the coordination of AFAD. We deliver aid to all provinces and districts in the earthquake zone, both with our own resources and with the support of thousands of volunteers who reach us. So far, as IMM, we have delivered 224 truckloads of aid to the earthquake area and we continue to do so. The total number of citizens rescued alive by İBB Group teams was 501. As IMM, we mobilized all our means to meet the needs of the earthquake zone. We have established a logistics base of 9 thousand square meters in Hatay. Later on, we established aid centers in districts such as Samandağ and İskenderun. So far, we have rescued more than 460 of our people alive from the rubble. We coordinate all these processes from AKOM. We work in cooperation with all municipalities, headmen and NGOs in Hatay.”
