Karpowership has signed a contract with Gambia National Water and Electric Corporation (NAWEC) to expand operations in the West African country.
According to the terms of the new contract, Karpowership will provide 30 MW of power to Gambia’s national grid from the power ship moored off the coast of Banjul for the first 3 years.
At the signing ceremony, Karpowership and NAWEC also agreed to convert operations to LNG-to-Power (generating power using Liquefied Natural Gas) before the end of three years. If the conditions for working with LNG are suitable for both parties, the contract with LNG will be extended for another 5 years, thus contributing to the Gambian government’s policy of using cleaner energy.
Following the power purchase agreement with NAWEC, in February 2018 Karpowership started to supply 30 MW of power to the national grid for two years. Karpowership’s intervention has significantly helped stabilize the unregulated power supply in the country, guaranteeing contract renewal for another two years in 2020.
Karpowership’s Africa Regional Director Emre Durmuşoğlu said that Karpowership has a proven track record of providing sustainable, clean, reliable, and affordable electricity with all its power ship operations in 4 continents.
Durmuşoğlu said, “Karpowership provides uninterrupted and reliable electricity for thermal power generation at one of the lowest prices. With our twin engines and hybrid operational capabilities, we will be able to convert our project at the Gambia to LNG-to-Power using natural gas, which produces much less carbon dioxide than its alternatives. We are proud to play our part in meeting the Gambia’s electricity needs while creating employment opportunities.”
