The DEGAK-20 Special Diving Team of the Coast Guard Command received the International Maritime Organization (IMO) “Outstanding Courage” award.
The Diving, Safety, Security, Search and Rescue Team (DEGAK) of the Coast Guard Command received an award at the International Maritime Award ceremony, which held in London on December 6.
The DEGAK-20 Special Dive Team, which carried out search and rescue operations on the boat that capsized off Fatih/Samatya and rescued a casualty alive, was considered worthy of an international award.
In the video shown at the award ceremony, the names of Doruk Durmuş Yıldız, Atakan Ömer Yenilmez, Erkan Baytekin and Olcay İbrahim Temeloğlu, representing the DEGAK-20 team, were mentioned and it was stated that they were nominated for their courage and determination in rescuing the casualty who was trapped in the fishing boat.
It was stated in the video that the diver team carried out search and rescue efforts and the team rescued 10 survivors and rescued an unconscious crew member:
“In total darkness and very dangerous underwater conditions, including floating objects and diesel fuel, they rescued the remainder of the survivors with a successful plan to rescue a crew member who was trapped in the cabin and was unable to swim. We thank the Turkish government for appointing such brave candidates.” expressions were used.
As part of the efforts of the Coast Guard Command for the safety of citizens, its global reputation and the courage of its personnel were documented with the award.
The committee, consisting of representatives of the International Chamber of Maritime Commerce, the International Maritime Pilots Association, the International Federation of Ship Captains Associations, the International Salvage Union, the International Maritime Rescue Federation and the International Transport Workers Federation within the structure of the IMO, evaluated 37 candidates submitted by 23 countries and 4 international organizations for the Outstanding Courage Award.
